Really quick answer needed.. whats best 990 or 995?

Coolpix of course :)
Finally found one of each, and dont know which one would be better. Priced within a few $$ of each other. Can you help me decide?

Thanks! B

Not much in it. Important bonus of the 990 is that it takes AA batteries.... 4x 2350mah Nimh rechargeables will last a long time. The cp990 is very well made, good solid construction (but I don't hear of too many accidents with the more plasticky cp995).
Cp995 produces cleaner images when you push up the iso to 200, so you can get acceptable results and double the shutter-speed (not quite so important if you use neatimage or specialised noise reduction software in-computer). The 4x zoom is a plus for non digiscoping, maybe a drawback in some ways for digiscoping ... you're tempted to be greedy with the zoom and therefore more inconsistant results.

The Nikon MC-EU1 remote works a bit better with the cp995 than 990 (in fact it won't work at all on cp990's that are on original firmware, these are very rare and you can upgrade online).

Personally, I think the cp990 produces more 'keepers' than the cp995.

regards,
Andy

Where were you able to find the 990? And are there any more available?

Hi Shetrick
I had searched online and was only having luck finding the cameras in the US, one on a store website that sell used cameras (they had two 995s), and the rest all on Ebay. I didnt want to have to order outside of Canada or buy on Ebay if I didnt have to, and fortunately we found both a 990 and a 995 at two different camera stores locally here in Ontario. We did buy the 990, and I'm trying really hard to make sense of all the settings (including finding a couple that Andy Bright recommends in his setting article- so far no luck!).

I also placed ads on a couple of local for-sale rec.forsale type boards, and did get some responses, but mostly from people who were hoping to recoup a good part of the investment they put out for the cameras new (I dont blame them, but the stores and ebay sell them for a couple hundred less than privately). We paid $400 Canadian for the 990, which came with nylon case, a 64 and a 128 cards, card reader, and all manuals, and a cd.

Its a bit of a search to locate the cameras (at least here).. but there is always Ebay (expect a lot of bidding). I couldnt find a 4500 at all, except on US ebay, and even then I think there was only a couple.

Bev :)
