Great Kent Rspb reserve day out Sun 11th March 2012

I went to Northward hill Rspb reserve in kent yesterday for a guided walk to view the biggest Heronry in Britain and WOW . . .

There was much to see and the walk was well carried out wiv 2 wardens answering any questions we had as well as having spotting scopes set up on lakes etc for up to view certain birds as well as supplying coffee and chocolate brownies .

The Herons were happily nesting with thousands of Rooks and what a sight that was and the noise was far bursting but what a rookery that was and i dont think even they would pick on the Herons with that long sharp stabbing beak.

There was a distinct flight path in and out of the nesting area and the males who apparently build the nest were 2 and throw out to the marsh to bring back sticks and other nesting material and the view was brilliant and i loved their slow flight with legs held straight out behind them.

It was a brilliant hot sunny day and the place was buzzing with life the whole time i was there and they have some very nice birds visit the reserve as well as all the resident birds this place is brilliant and right next to river Thames with constant flocks of waders and other wetland birds.
There was apparently a Marsh Harrier spotted but i did nt see it but enjoyed the day none the less.

Its definately somewhere i would like to visit quite often as its virtually on my door step as i live a mile away from the Thames and this site is walkable or like yesterday a nice bike ride away and there is virtually every British bird in the book visiting this reserve at some point and thats without the passing migrants from abroad that stop off from time to time.

All in all a very enjoyable day i did nt want to go home and very well run and managed by all the Rspb wardens that are involved with this reserve, its well worth a visit and i can highly recommend it if you live near by or dont mind travelling,

Deano

Sounds like a very pleasant and interesting day out. You will have to make sure you go back!
