Bats & Cats

Keith (the cat) pours himself through the cat flap, pauses, the door flick-flack behind; licks his paws as the Robin spies him, ceasing his singing, as the evening orchestra's crescendo hits the night's falling.

Blackbirds, 'bible black', "pink" in alarms and Magpies' rapid-fire rattles hit the gloom, and Song thrushes serenade the darkning sky.

February bats jink through poplars, silent scraps of tautness flexing.

Out over the field before night hides them a Heron, then a Buzzard glide and flap to hunt and home. Rooks' eerie caws echo-answer across from the charcoal woods.

Night: and the Robin sings again.

Hi H,
You've made me wonder about bats and temperature. What is the nighttime Temp at your place now? Are bats out during winter nights? For some reason I always thought of them as being out in warm weather--don't know why I thought that. I'm going to have to google now--poor leetle grey cells--I've been putting the pressure on them of late.

Hi Sue, you're right of course, bats here are usually hibernating but will emerge on unseasonably warm nights to hunt. Which is what happened a few nights ago.

Good to hear some warmth is emerging. I did google a bit and found that some bats in the US hibernate and some migrate to warmer climes. I do plan on putting up bat houses at my place when I get home. We have some tiny bats that feed over our swimming pool in the summer.

Ah, I knew I'd read your fine poem before. I don't know why it was moved but this is a good place for it. Is there any reason it couldn't be in both threads, I wonder?
