Leaving the coast I drove to Binhai Forest Park and on the way spotted 4 & 5. My biggest disappointment from DiShui Hu and the coast being no sightings of some of my favourite birds ; kingfishers and bitterns. Next time perhaps !

Binhai Forest Park to come when I've got my breath back

If you have come straight to the last post then please also take a look at new posts #42 to #46 above too. Thanks !

the mystery fly-away of post 45 is I think a White-cheeked Starling.

Cheers

Judging on bill length the fly-away waders in post 46 are Whimbrels

Here are three shots of one of the birds I was after on a recent short trip to Hainan (anyone up for a 12 hour flight to Sanya ? That's what it took us) !

Olive Backed Sunbird (hummingbird sized little darlings). Sorry about the size of the last one - the forum software keep replacing one shot with another when I try to upload (similar names) so I have to load these at different three sizes to get it to accept them all !

Yes, nice! I like the pink reflection on the underside in the second pic, and a very interesting pose in the third!

Thank you Gretchen ! Actually that is a very typical pose for the OBS - I have more shots of them (male and female) in that pose than any other ! I was so so lucky to get the shots of the OBS on the flower. Light was fading fast and all the other tourists had long gone back to their tour buses, my driver had called me three times (that famous Chinese in-built stomach-clock was telling him it was dinner time) but I knew that my best chance in this area was at dusk when even most of the staff had closed for the night. I'm certain I wouldn't have got the shots but for the fact I was wearing camo trousers, cap and top - he just didn't see me and the first two of these were taken from less than 5 metres away.

Well I have a fantastic trip to Wu Yuan to get around to writing up sooner rather than later but I thought some of you may like to see my photos of those amazing but tiny Pied Falconets (16-18cms/6-7 inches and ca. 35-40g / 1.25 -1.5 ozs).

You can find them on my website here : http://frogfish.smugmug.com/gallery/...8647&k=DChZTzk

Nice shots of the falconets.

Wish they'd have come in that close when I was there last month.

Thanks Jeff. I found out after after 7.5 shot less hours that by far the best time is early morning about an hour after sunrise, so 05.30 - maybe 08.00.

White Rumped Shama & Unknown

Since I've not had a moment to spare recently, or so it seems, herea a couple more from the many birds I enjoyed seeing in Hainan Island :

1. Male White Rumped Shama
2. Female White Rumped Shama
3. Unknown - large (crow-sized), spent most of it's time in the canopy.

I like Malkohas - I've really enjoyed watching them in Thailand ... so brightly colored and yet they can nearly disappear in the green leaves of a tree. They often drew my attention with their big jumps on to some branch which they would set a-quiver - a little bit like a squirrel.
