Paraguay + Iguazu Falls Argentina 2012

A second trip to South America to Paraguay with Keith "Tony Blair" Miller had me on an evening flight 03/02 from London Heathrow with TAM airlines via Sao Paulo Brazil to Asuncion Paraguay. Keith is a keen mammal lister as well as a well travelled South American birder. The first event of the trip was soon to follow as I had carried my tripod as hand luggage which proved to be a big mistake as the customs officers at Sao Paulo would not let me through the transit area. After negotiating with several representatives of TAM I was allowed to book the tripod in at the TAM check in desk for the price of a Brazilian passport stamp and of course a landing fee. A trip is not complete without events along the way!

The birds are listed in order of appearance and only recorded at the first location they were seen.

***BRAZIL***

Sao Paulo Airport 04/02/2012

A six hour wait for the connecting flight gave me my first Brazilian bird. The tripod saga had killed a couple of hours!

Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus)

***PARAGUAY***

Cudad del Este 04/02/2012

A brief stop at this airport produced a couple of trip ticks. Both would be regularly seen during the journey.

American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)
Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis)

Asuncion Airport 04/02/2012

Binoculars at the ready the following were seen near the car park and taxi area.

Rock Dove (Columba livia)
Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus)
Sayaca Tanager (Thraupis sayaca)

Hotel del Sol Asuncion 04/02/2012

After a long day of travelling, I dropped my bag into the room, took a deep breath and explored the hotel grounds and local streets to start the birding extravaganza. Keith gripped me off along the way with a dove that I caught up with later on in the trip. A secluded garden produced the thrushes and dove.

Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus)
White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi)
Rufous-bellied Thrush (Turdus rufiventris)
Rufous Hornero (Furnarius rufus)
Greyish Saltator (Saltator coerulescens)
Glittering-bellied Emerald (Chlorostilbon aureoventris)
Creamy-bellied Thrush (Turdus amaurochalinus)
House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)
Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis)
Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis)

After dark a quick bite to eat and a well earned rest.

Red-crested Cardinal (Paroaria coronata)
Cocoi Heron (Ardea cocoi)
Picui Ground-dove (Columbina picui)

Excellent report.

That Roseate Spoonbill is gorgeous. I didn't know you could find it in Chaco, since it's so dry. Was that picture in a tree high or near the ground?

Cheers.

Thank you.

There was a suprising amount of water throughout the whole region. Roads to the Pantanal were completely flooded hence a change of plan and a visit to the falls in Argentina.

Many water birds were present that were not expected for the time of year. A pair of Comb Duck seen at Enciso first record for the reserve. The Spoonbill was in a tree above a pond. I will post more of the trip over the next few days.....Complete log of lifers in list section...

Regards

Kevin

Loma Plata 07/02/2012

Seen on the roof to the lodge before departing for Enciso.

Fork-tailed Flycatcher (Tyrannus savana)

La Patria 07/02/2012

Aplomado Falcon [sp] (Falco femoralis)
Blue-crowned Parakeet [sp] (Aratinga acuticaudata)

On the way to Enciso the truck was traversing a rough piece of road when Keith exclaimed!! The truck came to a halt and he in a very excited voice said “Puma”. The cat had been seen in an opening off the road the truck returned to the point but sadly the cat had moved on. This was to be the only sighting during the trip but a marvellous sighting all the same. O to have been on the other side of the truck...such is life!

Enciso National Park 07/02/2012

This area is dry Chaco with a waterhole a short walk away from the accommodation block. Many of the paths were used by soldiers in the Chaco war. There were trenches and bunkers still present off the path. A dirt road passed through the area with a disused airfield beyond the tree scrub line. These areas were to be the focus of our attentions for the next few days.

Scimitar-billed Woodcreeper (Drymornis bridgesii)
Rufous-browed Peppershrike (Cyclarhis gujanensis)
Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes maculatus)
Red-billed Scythebill (Campylorhamphus trochilirostris)
Great Rufous Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes major)

Night Drive

Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus)
Rufous Nightjar (Antrostomus rufus)
Tropical Screech-owl (Megascops choliba)

Enciso National Park 08/02/2012

A pair of Chaco Owl ventured into the compound most nights. An early start bagged Nacunda Nighthawk and flying over the disused airfield a pair of Comb duck were seen. This was the first record of this species in this area. A Tapir track was found on a path to the waterhole on top of one of our footprints. Sadly the group was unable to locate the animal.

Tataupa Tinamou (Crypturellus tataupa)
Nacunda Nighthawk (Chordeiles nacunda)
Hepatic Tanager (Piranga flava)
Plush-crested Jay (Cyanocorax chrysops)
Comb Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos)
Pale-breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis albescens)
Stripe-backed Antbird (Myrmorchilus strigilatus)

Night Drive

Another very rare record for Enciso.

Striped Owl (Pseudoscops clamator)

Enciso National Park 09/02/2012

An early start resulted in a stake out for the Crested Gallito a special for Paraguay. This bird had been heard several times since our arrival. So it was into the bush to lie low and wait for the bird to show. A bonus of two birds both calling each other and the group positioned itself in the middle. They are fast movers so concentration was at a premium then bingo!

Green-barred Woodpecker (Colaptes melanochloros)
Crested Gallito (Rhinocrypta lanceolata)
Cinereous Tyrant (Knipolegus striaticeps)
White-barred Piculet(Picumnus cirratus)
Short-billed Canastero (Asthenes baeri)
Rufous Casiornis (Casiornis rufus)
Picazuro Wood-pigeon (Patagioenas picazuro)
Crested Hornero (Furnarius cristatus)
Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola)
Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus)
Tawny-crowned Pygmy-tyrant (Euscarthmus meloryphus)

Medanos del Chaco 09/02/2012

A drive through a check point and to the area where the ex president of TAM airlines had his house prior to him coming to a sticky end in a light aircraft crash. The derelict building is now occupied by the Indigenous people. The group were in search of a Paraguay special the Spot-winged Falconet which was no-where to be seen. But two Black chested Buzzard-eagles did make an appearance.

Chalk-browed Mockingbird (Mimus saturninus)
Black-chested Buzzard-eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus)

Enciso National Park 10/02/2012

It was time to leave this area but first two specials Quebracho Crested Tinamou and Black-legged Seriema had been regularly heard in the mornings so this was the target bird along the road. The Tinamou was the first to show scuttling across the road. Kieth had seen BL Seriema flying over the accommodation a day earlier. Unfortunately I was sitting facing the wrong way when the “Flip” shout went out. I have learnt this is something good from previous experiences. Fortunately the group had good views of this bird along the road...One that didn’t get away!

Variable Antshrike (Thamnophilus caerulescens)
Quebracho Crested Tinamou (Eudromia formosa)
Black-legged Seriema (Chunga burmeisteri)
Zone-tailed Hawk (Buteo albonotatus)

A great report Kevin - I had some great birding in Paraguay a few years ago and the mammals really are fantastic. Sadly, Spot-winged Falconet eluded me at the same place!

Thank you

Keith recorded all the mammals we saw, I will add them to this report when he sends the full list to me.

More to follow.....

This area contains an old fort which featured in the Chaco War with derelict bunkers and trenches. A small number of Chacoan Peccary are kept at the site sponsored by San Diego Zoo these animals were thought to be extinct until 1975. I decided to have a little wander around and jammed into a pair of Cream-backed Woodpeckers only problem was Keith and Paul were at the accommodation area relaxing. A bit of arm waving and subtle jumping around took a while to get their attention. The birds remained for a good few minutes but by the time Keith had got to me both had moved off and were not relocated.

Little Thornbird (Phacellodomus sibilatrix)
Brushland Tinamou (Nothoprocta cinerascens)
Lined Seedeater (Sporophila lineola)
Cream-backed Woodpecker (Campephilus leucopogon)
Black-backed Water-Tyrant (Fluvicola albiventer)

Loma Plata 11/02/2012

The next day took us back through Loma Plata and the Low Chaco. Only one lifer added in this area.

Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga)
Chotoy Spinetail (Schoeniophylax phryganophilus)

Low Chaco 11/02/2012

I caught up with two Caracara species I had missed on the road up. A burst of lifers over some open fields. The Giant Wood Rail stopped the truck and the Long winged Harrier obliged soon after.

Grey Monjita (Xolmis cinereus)
Scarlet-headed Blackbird (Amblyramphus holosericeus)
Subtropical Doradito (Pseudocolopteryx acutipennis)
Rusty-collared Seedeater (Sporophila collaris)
Giant Wood-Rail (Aramides ypecaha)
Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango)
Yellow-headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima)
Long-winged Harrier (Circus buffoni)
Yellow-billed Cardinal (Paroaria capitata)

Late afternoon and after dusk.

This was our last mornings birding at this very picturesque location. There was still time to add some species to our lists. A bit of truck trouble extended our stay slightly but this was to be the end of our adventure with Paul and the Laguna Blanca crew. Richard would travel back to Asuncion with Paul and Keith and I would be picked up by Hugo and Monica for the remainder of our trip.

Plain Antvireo (Dysithamnus mentalis)
Little Woodpecker (Veniliornis passerinus)
Sooty-fronted Spinetail (Synallaxis frontalis)
Thrush-like Wren (Campylorhynchus turdinus)
Golden-crowned Warbler (Basileuterus culicivorus)
Masked Tityra (Tityra semifasciata)
Pale-crested Woodpecker (Celeus lugubris)
Masked Yellowthroat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis)
