Hi dj I think someone will be able to help you on here but first a little more info is needed.

Camera used, make of lens and converter, were you using a tripod/monopod or hand holding? What kind of shutter speed were you getting?

I would hazard a guess that it is probably camera shake.

Pete

Your convertor will change your "F" stops by 2 steps thus changing your shutter speed.(Slower)

I think that a lot comes down to the camera/lense balance. Adding the extender will shift the centre of balance outwards as well as lengthening the exposure time. I don't know about the relative weights of the 300n and your lens but I suspect the camera might be a bit light - I have no difficulty with either a Tamron 28-300XR + Tamron 1.4x, or Canon 300 f/4 + Canon 1.4x Extender II, on my Canon 10D. But, I wouldn't dream of using the 300 f/4 with, or without extender, hand-held on my 300V unless I was using a remote shutter release as the camera is feather light.

Using a canon Eos 300, teleplus 2x converter and a canon EF 75-300 F4-5.6 lens we found that without support it was almost impossible to get really sharp pictures. It was always a case of getting some support for the camera and then the results were fine. As you did we always used 400ASA films as with slower films we had absolutely no success. That setup is on Ebay at the moment as since my wife went digital she has not used the Eos at all.
We went out today and bought a TCon 17 ( 1.7X teleconverter) for her Olympus C740UZ and are having similar problems with that( the setup gives an approximate max focal length equivalent of 640mm). On the tripod it's superb, but hand held about half of the pictures are blurred, so the problem is the same. Support is needed somehow.

We've been trying again today and have had 100% success by using the moving objects mode on the camera, it looks like an athlete on the modes dial. This was hand held with an equivalent focal length of 640mm. It might be worthwhile trying it on your EOS.
