SV diopter shift

Slow focus on the 8.5 sv, fine. Gritty focus, not great. Skipping diopter when changing the IPD? Not acceptable!

SWARO mine is coming your way very soon. The results of the service will be posted here on bird forums.

This is the first time I've heard of this complaint. Maybe I have a lemon?

BTW, Newfie is not having a good day.

I've never heard of that issue before. Looking at my SV, I'm trying to figure out how that could occur, it has to be something broken in the rear hinge focus / diopter wheel mechanics, where movement of the hinge is translating to unwanted movement of the diopter.

Sorry about your bad day, Newfie, mine was yesterday where among other things I did the dreaded 'reply to all' to a work email, resulting in some embarrassment.

I'm sure Swaro will love getting your glasses back to see what the hell went wrong. You can bet that when you get them back, though, they'll be as perfect as they can be - I know that an SV can be made without grittiness, my replacement set is quite good in the focus wheel department.

Even though it's off-topic here ... But should an alpha be "quite good in the focus wheel department"? "Quite good" isn't really good enough I'd say, not for the price these bins cost.

Herman, I have a large collection of alphas. Guess which one has the smoothest and most consistent focus? My Nikon Premier or hgl 8x42. Oops but that one is not an alpha MY EDG is so easy to turn in the midrange it feels like the diopter is not locked down. At the extremes it is a bit stiffer. Maybe this will change in time. Zeiss has a very nice focuser as well. Ultravid is stiff, but consistent and watertight. My el 32 non sv is fine.

John thanks for the kind words. When it rains it pours. The "reply all" button has gotten many people in big trouble, some fired.

My SV is packed up and going out today. It's a shame, optically it is one of the best. If they give me a new one, I hope it is as optically good.

Hi Newfie

Cheer up Pal. And who cares if your smoothie Nikon is supposedly not an alpha, its an alpha to you.

Hope your Swaros come back soon and out-smooth your Nikon.

My 20+ year old Swaro 6x30 SLC's are possibly a bit creamier in the focus wheel dept, but they don't have to deal with the complexity of the diopter and focus on the same wheel. Maybe in 20 years the SV's will break in and become even better.

If the wheel feel on the SLC's is a 10, the SV's are a 9. That is pretty good in my book, and I'll take the trade off for the unbelievable ergonomics and design of the SV's.
