new feeder

I have a lot of blue jays around my part and I've been laying peanuts out on my deck rail which they immediately consume, its like they line up like at an airport, I've got some of there system down....one lands on my roof as some sort of guard while 1 or 2 grab one then the footer jumps down, grabs one and the process repeats....anyway, I got this circular type feeder that holds peanuts and it seems they have no interest, I know they're there cause they start screaming at me when I get home in the morning, does it just take a couple of days to get used to it or are they forming some kind of protest?

Probably take a few days for Jays to become acclimated to it. Fledges might have been well schooled in the old ways. Mature parent not recognizing as food source, not able to teach. If they're accustomed to taking from ground and then have to re-learn the process from an object that moves when they land on it, takes a little time to adjust. Perhaps you could arrange a few peanuts on feeder in a way that they would notice. Know it sounds goofey...maybe "glue" a few on it with small dabs of peanut butter where they're easily seen. Not too much PB either, it will foul their plumage.

It depends where your feeder is and what it is! If it is a mesh one you hang on the tree, then it may be too small! Also just confirming that the birds may prefer/be used too ground feeding

Hope this helped!

I'm not sure exactly what type of feeder you have whether it is an open type round dish feeder like what you use to feed mealworms or the cylindrical long mesh peanut feeders. If it is an open type, you probably haven't given it enough time for them to get use to it. If it is the silo mesh peanut feeder then the blue jays aren't going to use it. Those type feeders are designed for more acrobatic type birds such as woodpeckers, finches, chickadees and nuthatches.
