Canon 500m F4 lens; advice appreciated

Hi,

I would appreciate some help.

1) After having problems for a few years finally the knob which tightens the lens cover to the lens gave up and I lost it in a field ; I knew I should have glued the screws in!

Well I have been able to order a new on at stupid pricebut I am not sure I am going to get it in time as off away thisSaturday and am taking the lens; if it does not arrive has anybody a short term solution to a problem others seem to have had?

2) I finally managed to find a lidfrom a plastic container which my wife found in pound shop which covers the lens as I loathe the large leather one; but it is actually a little too deep and does not allow a perfect fit into my GuraGear bag when attached to a 1.4 converter.

Does anybody have a solution; seems there was one in the US which was the cover of a Corning Ware French White casserole dish; 5.5" diamter but cannt find it in the US; any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

My thanks/ Mike

I bought a neoprene lens cover for my 300 f2.8. Its great, fits well and has a hard piece in the end for protection. Far superior to the canon one. Didn't cost too much but in my opinion great value. Can pm you the link if you want.

Cant help with your other problem sorry.

Lens coat make excellent neoprene covers - highly recommended. I've moved to a 600mm f4 but accidentally bought a 'hoodie' in camo colours a size too small which is sitting unused on my desk. Make me an offer if you like. :)

I use a Whitefurze food container lid on my 500 f.4. It clips on perfectly and only adds a couple of mm to the length.

I use a neoprene lens cover that i got from ebay made by op/tech warehouse express do the same but by lenscoat much better than a plastic one as i stuff it in my pocket when actually shooting but keep it on when carrying the lens.

Got one of these with my (second hand) 600 F4 IS, new ones are expensive! But it is the only really practical solution, the Canon offering is a joke.

Never heard of Don Zeck before but having checked out the web site I have to say I'm impressed. $77 including postage plus a potential 20% import duty on top makes them very expensive indeed though. Roughly £60. I guess a small % of the lens cost though !

As it happens they put $1 as value on the pack, I did not even ask them to do this. It is after all only a round plastic disc! So no duty etc. I just got another one yesterday.

Hi When i got my 500 F4 i was given a Don Zeck lens cap. While it seems expensive for what it is. I just love it, quick easy to put on/take off i guess it is only the price and that it is made in the good old USA that we don't see many more.
