Bird ID in Penn, USA

I'm new to this site and not well versed in birding, but I had a unique encounter with a large bird yesterday and can't ID it. I was eating lunch under a tree in a moderately wooded area and from behind and overhead came a big shadow slowly flying over - it turned and perched momentarily on a branch, then flew out, down right in front of me trying to land in a small stream; but then it saw me and changed course, flew up and away. It was grayish/blue in color, and when it was flying, it had like a U-shape hanging below its beak/neck. It all happened so fast, couldn't get a pic or remember any other details. Can anyone help?

Check out Great Blue Heron, maybe it was that? They fold their long necks up in flight in a manner that may explain the "U shape" you describe.

Great Blue Heron or Little Blue Heron would be my thought.
