Your experiences of art competitions?

Since there is there is nowadays more and more art competitions where you as an artist have to pay (sometimes quite a summ of money) to enter, it is important to know witch competitions might be worth to participate. Of course winning or even getting to the show is unlikely, but still I would feel better to participate "good and honest" competitions and not tho those that are just making money for the owners.

So if you would have to choose one competition in a year, what would it be and why? I hope you understood what I mean.

Would narrow it down to three Mark..

The David Shepherd, BBC Wildlife and Birdwatch/Svarowski European Awards.

These three seem to be the three main comps this side of the atlantic at least..

Ive never entered a competition, so beyond knowing about these three, I cant really comment further...

I was going to suggest the SWLA annual exhibition, and then I realized that that is most likely the same as the Birdwatch/Swarovski that Alan mentions.

In the US there is 'Birds in Art,' which always has a fair number of international artists. I prefer SWLA to it myself but I think it all depends on what moves you in art. Many of these have at least parts of the last show online so you can get a pretty good idea of what is shown. For me that's what's most important. I'm most apt to apply, especially if the cost is high, to a competition where I like previous entrants.

There are some people here who've been very successful in a number of thiese so hopefully they'll eventually weigh in.
