Female Pine Grosbeak

I had this pretty little girl actually sit still long enough for me to get a shot of her through the window before she took off. I'm still trying to get a picture of the male at least this close too.. he is such a beautiful shade of red and gray. These guys have to most beautiful songs too!
I also have lots of their cousins, the yellow and olive green evening grosbeaks, here as well but can't get anywhere near enough to them for a good picture. They are such nervous birds.
I'm looking forward to spring when yet another cousin arrives, the rose-breasted grosbeak. Don't get to see him for long but it's better than not seeing him at all! :)

Thanks TonyK and Gaye,
There are more grosbeak pictures on my online photo album, if you're interested. They are definitely some of the most beautiful birds in this area. Such a great splash of color against the white of the snow!
And yes, we'll be in full force winter until at least the end of March yet. :( Warmed up to a balmy -13C today over yesterday's -40C. Quite an improvement!

Wow, looks like you have been hit hard by winter Tammie. I have yet to add any grosbeak to my life list. They are just not that common around the coastline here.

The grosbeak is one of the most populous birds around here. I normally have many more pine grosbeaks in the winter than I do this winter and I don't know why. This year, I have all kinds of evening grosbeaks... it usually the other way around. Strange. But they are certainly a favorite bird of mine. Their bright colors and loud songs are wonderful in the winter! K C, I hope you get to see one sometime. Dmitri, thanks for your kind comment.
