Butterfly ID - Hong Kong
Having previously posted this in the Butterfly ID forum without success apologies again for re-posting.
Not having a field guide covering the Butterflies of Hong Kong I would appreciate any help concerning the correct ID of the individual in the photographs. Many Thanks |

I've got a field guide to Chinese butterflies. There are two reasonable candidates...
A ragged and worn Tajuria cippus seems the best bet. The outside wing coloring and tassle bit on the ends fit, however the inside is a bit off. See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tajuria_cippus The Maneca bhotea also seems similar, particularly the iridescent inner wing sides, though the outside and overall wing shape is less perfect.

There is an excellent website for Hong Kong Lepidoptera: http://home.hkbutterfly.org/
From the pictures they show on their website I think a female 'Chocolate Royal' (Remelana jangala) comes very close (http://old.hkbutterfly.org/r_jangala.htm). If you need confirmation I suggest you to use their forum. Please let us know what the verdict was. Bart |

I agree with this being a Chocolate Royal. The brown underwing with blue markings near the tail are good features.
Out of interest, where was this taken? |

OK, I thought it might be Deep Bay because it looked like it was on mangrove leaves.
Chocolate Royal is very common at Mai Po (and presumably also Wetland Park) because it feeds on Kandelia, one of the most common mangrove species in Deep Bay. |
