Amanita Fulva

OK lets see how many points out of 10 I get for trying to id this one. This was found about 3 weeks ago on a grass verge beside some mixed deciduous and coniferous forest. Cap width approx 5cm, height 7cms. Has a grooved cap margin and a textured stem. Gills white, flesh white and there is no staining when broken or bruised. There is also no ring. I think it is Amanita Fulva. The only doubt I have is that my book says it has a smooth stem? So which is it? do I get the best swats cap or the dunces cap? lol

Psilo, you are in the right area, but I'll only offer 7 points out of 10. You have correctly pointed out that the stem isn't smooth, but it also looks from your photo as if there are fragments of veil left on the cap surface and, importantly, that they are grey.

These, and the general colour of the cap, point to your fungus being Amanita ceciliae (aka inaurata). The scales on the stem become somewat greyish and zoned in this species, but your specimen was still young. (I note that the typical 'zigzag' zonation is starting to show in your second photograph.)

Thanks alot Alan 7 out of 10 aint bad for a beginner lol and I am pleased with the way that I am now looking for more clues. I dont think I have ever found something that needs your skills of observation more. veil colour is something I have forgotten to look at though. WIll remember that next time. Your expertise is much appreciated
