Anyone help with this ID?

Simonph has posted this Gallery photo asking for some ID help and I know that not everyone has time to view the Gallery every visit.

It's some sort of Buzzard seen in Dubai.

Surely the two shots show different birds? The perched one looks fine for a Long-legged, and structuarally so does the dark bird.

Hi Steve - yes they are two different birds. Just wondering if this is a dark phase and a light phase of the same species hunting the same patch...
thanks.

The perched bird looks great for LLB. I'd like to make sure that the bird in the air isn't a Steppe Buzzard though....it didn't shout long-winged in the picture and I can't recall plumage features.. need a book!

Had a read and it didn't help much! One worrying feature for LLB is the trailing edge of the wing .. it should be much the strongest bar.... however I can only do these things when they are flying.... as in moving, never from stills. and I've just read about a smaller, more common Buzz-like race of LLB in Sinai... so I officially give up!

The first bird does look very good for LLB in my opinion, 2nd one bit difficult saw quite a few borderline birds in Greece this summer. Steppe Buzzard does show alot of variation as common Buzz, think ill leave it to the experts.

We're not really on the Steppe migration route acc. to the bird reports but 1-6 have occured every year usually singles. The perched bird is a sure fire LLB.

Thanks for all of your comments - sure thing that dark brown buzzard/eagle sized birds on a migratory path are very hard to ID!
