Second-hand Svensson?
Hi,
I am a rookie trainee ringer and have tried all the usual bookshops in vain for a fourth edition of "Identification guide to European passerines" by Lars Svensson. Does anyone on this forum have a spare copy/copy for sale at the moment? Any leads welcomed! Thanks, I really enjoy lurking here, but haven't had anything worth contributing yet. Mícheál ![]() |

Hello Micheal and on behalf of those of us on staff here, a very warm welcome to you.
You've posted your query in the right spot and should get more attention here so good luck on your search.

Hello Mícheál and welcome to Birdforum.
Don't worry, I too have very little to say, but I often make the mistake of saying it anyway!! You could try NHBS, or maybe Birding world books? All the best Sean |

They're like gold dust, I believe. According to Bookfinder.com there's a completely revised and updated edition (they say fourth, but presumably mean fifth) due out next year. Wonder what I'd get for my old third edition?

Regarding the editions, I think the new and revised edition which is in preparation is the fifth, but that is apparently delayed again, so there may be just a re-print of the fourth ed. coming up However, I have been unable to get a firm date anywhere for any of these events, so I have decided to go looking for a copy online, as I would like to have the use of a copy while I am training. I must say I am really surprised and heartened by the number of replies on this thread in such a short time, I might hit paydirt yet! Mícheál |

Hi Jane, I would buy a 3rd edition if you are selling - I haven't seen a 3rd edition but can't imagine that the changes between the 3rd and 4th editions would be very extensive.
Thanks for the link, but unfortunately that bookseller seems to be just taking advance orders for the 5th edition, whose publication date is really not known, and the offer seems a little speculative to me. Am I being unfair to www.booksandcollectibles.com? Nobody else seems to know when it is going to be published, including the BTO................ Mícheál |

"To follow up on this thread, can anyone offfer any other info of where in europe a copy of this book maybe available??"
ESTEBANNIC, Mícheál, et all interested, Due to the ongoing interest in this book, I e-mailed Jacquie at the ringing unit of the BTO for an update on the projected publication date. Here is the reply which I received :- "Sorry, we are chasing it up with Svensson, but he doesn't have a date yet. We are also trying to get a reprint of the current edition. Jacquie." So there it is at the moment. A re-print of the current version may be available prior to the new version, as Svensson is so busy with so many things at present, the timescale for publication seems to be slipping into the near distant future rather than the near future. There are only 24 hours in a day, and one cannot do everything that everyone else requires along with one's own work. Regards Malky. |
