Question Is this a ssp. hrota?

These photos were taken recently in Portugal. I believe it to be a hrota. Can anyone please confirm?

Hi Jose

Yes I would agree that your Brent Goose image is of the race hrota.

Jose

Your second pic shows a first winter hrota bird as the white neck line is still not fully developed and also the clear white wingbars are also a diagnostic feature for a first winter hrota bird.

Thanks Tom

Is the white feathering on the legs exclusive to hrota?

Regards

Jose

I've just looked this up in the Collins Guide and the answer to your question is yes, it is exclusive to hrota. The dark-bellied Brent ( bernicla ) has dark feathering on the legs. So pretty easy to remember then :

pale-bellied(hrota) = pale feathering on legs
dark-bellied(bernicla) = dark feathering on legs

Didn't know that myself as I have very little field experience of wild geese. Learn something new every day !
