Additional Hard Drive - (first started by Leif)

Last month I added an additional hard drive (Maxtor 160GB-7200-8MB cache), identical to the the original, in a new set-up that I built last December.
At the first attempt to use it, the drive would not spin, and was subsequently replaced under warranty (no explanation and no apology was forthcoming!).
Has anyone else had experience of a hard drive (any make) failing from new, or I am I very much in the minority? The only drive I have known that failed was a 20MB drive (yes 20 megabytes!) in a 11 years old IBM compatible 286 machine, running DOS software, about 6 or 7 years ago, after I had repeatedly advised my prat of a manager that he really should have the machine replaced ASAP!

Roger

Yes , strangely enough , another Maxtor , this time a 40gb drive crashed irrepairably a few months ago in my backup machine , no warning just gave up the ghost , was replaced under warranty . Not many , if any makers give 3 yr guarantees , mostly one year now .

Not from the get-go, but I had a General Digital that made a lot of noise from the start and rendered it's soul after only a couple of weeks. I have also have two Maxtor 80G's fail on me. I have since switched to Seagate and ghost to an external Lacie HDD.

Came across a new 250GB Seagate that was u/s on Friday! (must be rare for Seagate!) Waiting for a replacement - luckily the original drive is still good (but full)!
