The bird was relatively small-like a mid-size Gull.

Hi Searobin,

Hard to tell with the accipiters - the angle of the shots doesn't help - part of me thinks Coopers (the kind of longish neck/head projection in the first pic especially) but the tail (shorter) says Sharpie more to me and the seeming lack of contrast between crown of the head and back coloration. Probably a Sharpie - I'm sure some other people will give you their reasoned thoughts though.

Thanks Streatham,
I am looking in the book and Sharpie looks good for ID.
Maybe I get him again this weekend.

"mid-size gull", together with the large headed, long tailed appearance, would make Cooper's Hawk the more likely.

Trevor - its realtively short tailed for an accipter, the head look big in the first pic only - since its craning its neck. It looks like a chunky female Sharpie to me.

The bird having passed the camera means the tail would be longer than the pics suggest. "Mid-size gull" would be too large for Sharpie. (wouldn't put any money on it though!)

Could be a Sharpie because of the squareness of the tail in the bird. Cooper's doesn't seem to fit.

The closest match I found was the Sharp-shinned Hawk. Sometimes shots like this are hard to ID but it's good practice. I like virtual birding!
