redpoll migration

yesterday i was watching a flock of 50-60 redpolls before they moved on there way north it is most i have seen for the last 10 or more years.i can remember 20 or more years ago when silver birch woods were full of flocks of hundreds of them all thrue autumn and winter.i have noticed that the birch seeds ripen by august now and then blow off before october could this be a big reason for the rapid decline in redpoll numbers.global warming maybe?
