I recently purchased a nikon 990 and i'm now in the market for a remote or cable release for the camera, i've seen the digisnap mentioned before, but not much on the cable type releases, is the electronic remote the best way to go to avoid shaking the camera?????

Whilst I am new at digiscoping I find that unless I'm very careful, camera shake from using the mechanical remote release cable can be very noticeable.
I haven't used one, but the electronic release method sounds like an ideal solution.

I use the MC-EU1and like it. There are some problems in that in can be quite slow, but it is possible to half-press to get the AF to work and then take the picture, which cuts the delay. It also can be used to control the camera zoom.

I see in the new 'Cable and Shutter Releases' forum that Andy mentions the Digisnap elctronic control. Has anyone tried this one yet ?

I have to be honest that I use the Nikon remote cable release most of the time. I also own the Jessops bracket, which can be used with a standard cable release. There are defiantly issues with the Remote release, on occasions it decides not to work, and the only solution is to reboot the camera, and it does have a tendency to work loose falling out of the camera if you are carrying the whole set-up around. The other issue is the boot up time of the camera with the release, you have to plug it in turn the camera on then activate the release to let the camera know its there.
Maybe I have just got used to it, and of course bad things always happen when the birds are perched still and posing beautifully.
I’m not sure why but I still prefer it to the Bracket arrangement even though this works perfectly well, its purely a matter of personal preference but having used both I favour the Nikon remote release, I could be in a minority.

Of course the other factor is price:
Nikon release £100 ish
Jessops Bracket and Cable release £30.

Lately I've been using a rubber band around the camera to hold the Digisnap serial plug in place. I believe this may eliminate the unexpected lock ups mentioned. That particular part of the set up was just poorly designed I believe. The sad part is, as far as I know, a simpler mini plug would have worked just as well and fit more securely.

I also found that a larger rubber band or small bungee cord around the scope barrel will securely hold the external battery.

Now I only need to figure out how to work bailing wire and duct tape into the act.
