Pelican Blood by Cris Freddi

Full of sex, violence, drugs, bad language and twitchers! Sounds really good. Ordered my copy so I'll post a wee review when I'm done:

http://www.ffbooks.co.uk/n28/n142480.htm

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...347916-4028419

I read an interview with him in yesterday's Metro newspaper and he was a twitcher himself back in the 80s. Apparently it was his regular meetings with eccentric birders that fuelled the idea for this novel!

I'll have some of that! very rarely read fiction but will make an exception for sex, violence, drugs, bad language and that other thing!

Soon to be in cinemas near you... the next Shallow Grave?

http://www.ecossefilms.com/in_develo..._blood_fs.html

"A novel about extreme birdspotters" - sums the twitching fraternity up nicely!

It's in Waterstones.

Got mine and the back cover says:

"What do you do when you get to 500? Kill yourself of course."

Wicked!

Bought a copy yesterday. Will let you know when I get to the end, though I suspect Tom will beat me to it.

Finished it in one sitting on the ferry from Aberdeen back to Shetland last Friday. I thought it was pretty good, and certainly bought home some memories of the old days of twitching with a band of mates, the sense of unity and euphoria; all there.

Rather intrigued about the inspiration for Stevie Red Bus - how many redhead female birders do you know who're also s***-hot illustrators? Can't be modelled on a real-life character... can it?! I have a theory...

Nah, though it does have a blackjack table these days!

It's a 13 hour overnight crossing, and I'm a quickish reader; maybe three hours saw it done and dusted.

Recommended.

Fantastic! Loved it from start to finish.

Could make for a classic brit flick along the lines of trainspotting.

Didn't you find it a little depressing Andrew? I found myself in a particular black mood for a couple of days after reading it. I think the problem was that I felt I could identify myself with some parts of the main character - which disturbed me a great deal

Same here but the depression boosts me, my kinda thing. No one likes 'happy as larry' types who see everything with rose coloured specs. Depressing is cool if you know what I mean. That's why stuff like this and Trainspotting is king, reality is that life is sh1te.

This book had lots of truisms in brief sentences. No BS in it.

Rambling ain't I?

Thanks Andrew

Knowing that you feel like that has made me feel great - now where did they say that Gamekeeper lives

Just got the review copies of Pelican Blood, and liked it very much. Decidedly too harsh for an American audience, and the whole Camus/Dostoyevski thing will pass most readers by, but it's a great book, authentic from the birding point of view and quite well constructed.
Read it!
