Question Hello! Woodpecker Question!

Hello from rural Indiana! I have never been much of a bird watcher but when I had one on my screen door for about 30 minutes I couldn't resist taking a few pictures. Now I just want to know what kind of bird it is. My husband and I agree that it is a woodpecker and I searched the bird forum pictures....I think it is a female Downy woodpecker. Can anyone tell me for sure? I have attached a picture. Thank you!!

Tanya

Hi, Tanya! A warm welcome to you from all of us on staff here at BirdForum!

I'd say your bird is a female Hairy, not a Downy, Woodpecker. The beak is nearly as long as the head (Downy's is less than half the head's length); there is no black barring on the outer white tail feathers (Downy always has this barring); and the black streak to the side of the upper breast is longer and more pronounced in Hairy (as your bird shows) than in Downy.

Very nice shot, BTW!

Thank you!

Thank you for the warm welcome Katy and Mark. The female Hairy was going to be my second guess. They look similar. I think I will start doing some more bird watching when I am in the yard and I will try and have the camera on hand!
