I picked one up yesterday from Jessops who price matched Warehouse express which was a good start. I was to some extent influenced by this sight;

My opinion is limited by the fact that my only other 2 Canon lenses are both zooms, that said I grew up with Canon prime lenses with film and have sorely missed not having at least 1 pin sharp lens in my set.

Early results are very good dispite the cloudy wet days my test pictures are encouraging. The inbuilt flash on my 350d works well with a diffusser/hanky for close ups to approx 6 inches (measured from the front of the lens, not the film plane) without any shadow or glare effects. I am really looking forward for some sunshine to test the macro setting in the garden. For me it doubles as an excellent 100mm equivelent portrait lens with the potential as a superb macro for good qaulity close ups if I can get the lighting right at close distance. FYI the 1:1 macro working distance is at approx 3 inches from the lens. I was pleasantly surprised to find the built in flash works at the closest macro setting, as this full frame picture attached demonstrates. Purists may say one should use a macro flash set up but at 1/3 the cost a 400L lense I will work with what I have for the time being.

For a third opinion try;
