RFI - Umbria, Italy in Fall

Hi,

I will be visiting Perugia and surrounding area, Umbria, Italy in early October. This is not primarily a birding trip, but hopefully I will have an opportunity to do at least some. I hope to rent a car. Does anyone have any info. re: birding in that area at that time of year - sites to check, specialty birds to look for etc.?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Hallo Richard,

I do not know this area, but I try to help, because nobody answered yet.
In August starts birdmigration in Germany and one route is via Italy into south.
About Itlay:

Maybe this E-Mail User could help
info-italia@migration-unlimited.org

If You do not get information ask here
http://vowa.ornithol.mpg.de/~vwrado/index.html
It is not Italy ( is south Germany ), but I am sure the have knowledge, because is easy to travel there.

In Italy, I think driving is not relaxed as in Canada.
If You want go by train look here

Best regards
Dieter

Hi Richard, the best site in that period of the year is the Alviano reserve, between Viterbo and Terni, south of Perugia; info in Italian (sorry) with a useful map here:

Other info in english here (sorry, bird names are sometimes badly translated):

and here:

Another important reserve is Colfiorito, near Assisi:

Have a nice trip !
Cheers

Thank you both for the information. If I manage to do any significant amount of birding there, I will let you know what I have seen.

Richard
