Autumn Geese Already?

I see a report of three Pink-Feet with a Greenland Whitefront today at Loch of Strathbeg! With a run of North-Westerlies over the last few days in the North of Scotland seems quite probable they are genuine migrants.
I also had a Greenland Wheatear this week on the Isle of Muck in the inner Hebs.
Is autumn starting early? Well they are forecasting a frost for sheltered glens here tonight!!

John.

Interesting John. Not heard of any movements here but I suppose three Pink-feet could have left the country without my noticing it! Icelandic Pink-feet are all moulting in the highlands at the moment.
Very autumnal here in SW Iceland today, gale force south-easterlies with hurricane force gusts flattening caravans. Any geese trying to get to Scotland today won't have got very far. It's also dark by 11 in the evening now, summer is disappearing fast.

I saw 2 Pink-feet and a White-front (couldn't tell what race) at Strathbeg on Saturday. I assumed these were birds that were summering rather than migrants. They could have summered elsewhere in Scotland and moved a short distance I suppose.

Yes think you're probably right Andrew, as Edward mentions below Pink-Feet would probably still be moulting on their breeding grounds.
Though it is only four to five weeks before the first should start to arrive!! I remember seeing small groups coming in to Strathbeg as early as the first week in Sept.

Hi Derek

Haven't heard about breeding success one way or another to be honest, although a friend was up in Pink-feet country at the weekend and said they were very numerous and he had great fun watching moulting birds shoot the rapids ŕ la Harlequin on massive glacial rivers.

gooses

Hallo John,

gooses migration I think is not yet in Germany.
But Grey Gooses start to collect on the meadows and on the lakes.
On lake Guelper See ( called petrol station of central european migration birds ) I saw maybe 1.000 gooses, 2 weeks ago ( see picture ).

http://www.birdforum.net/thedirector...cat=500&page=1

In autumn I heard should come until 100.000 gooses, around this lake area.

Best regards
Dieter

Yesterday I only saw the geese flying in. Today I went and saw them in the park. Approx 100, I think this is too many to be the resident geese.
But unless they are wearing Tshirts saying where they are from I cant confirm 100% that they are not resident geese. Word is the numbers of residents up here is rising pretty quickly.

I saw one White-front in Italy yesterday, don't know if it's a migrant or summerer though.

I'd guess it's a summer straggler Jurij. Last month I saw a White-front at Hortobagy in Hungary, along with 3 Barnacle Geese!

It was a great trip but I haven't got round to putting together a report yet. Maybe in a few weeks time. I'm actually going back to Hungary on Saturday, although I won't be able to go birding all the time.
