In my search for all things Corvine, I happened to come across the following image of an Australian Raven. This is the best I have found on the internet so far for this species.

What is the white ring at the base of the bill?

The five Australian members of Corvus, like our Jackdaw have a white Iris.
They include:

Australian Raven - C. coronoides (western and eastern race)
Little Raven - C. mellori
Torresian Crow - C. orru
Little Crow - C. bennetti
Forest Raven - C. tasmanicus

Try finding info off the net about any of them!......there's virtually nothing at all.

Gosh, that's the eye. I thought it was the dark shiny dot a bit further back. Need to change over to my spare pair of specs!

Ah well, it had to happen eventually. This ancient post from last year has come full circle now as a member (Neil) has now posted a very fine image of an Australian Raven in the gallery.
