Bushnell Discoverer Roofs
A while back there was much praise in other threads on the now discontinued Bausch & Lomb phase coated Discoverer roofs. Has anyone tried the now available Bushnell versions (7 and 10 power) - how do they compare with their B & L predecessors and are they worth the money?

They seem to be identical. They are what you would expect for a roof in this range, great resolution in the middle, softer edges, CA that verges on intrusive. Being an older design they are a bit heavier than newer designs.

The Eagle Optics folks say they are entirely different and inferior, although they wouldn't (or couldn't) specify the differences. Unfortunately, the bins are impossible to find locally. |

The new ones are 'entirely different and inferior' to the old ones, or visa-versa?

I would have said they are closer to identical than EO told you, I wouldn't imagine Bushnell changed much except the badging. Is it possible EO was implying that they are not as good as their competition as they once were, being an older design?

It is also possible they were trying to say the older, non-phase-corrected models were not as good, but B&Ls version had phase correction recently, before Bushie dropped the name.

Better than old Discoverers
The new Discoverer is actually better than the old B&L version. The same parts are used for both versions but the new Bushnell version has XTR Technology that increases the light transmission over what the old B&L product had.
Unfortunately Eagle Optics is probably trying to sell you one of their many Eagle optics branded products. Asking them about the Discoverer is like asking Nikon about it. |
