playing bird song

I've come across various people who talk about playing bird song to elicit a reply (for the purpose of mapping bird territories etc.)
I have tried this to a very limited extent on a cassette player and got nowhere. What device is effective and cheap.

(I know that you have to be careful not to upset breeding birds; avoid disturbing Schedule I species etc.)
