Need help identifying a bird
Hello everyone. I'm a relatively new bird watcher and live in NYC. I just saw a duck that I can not identify from my Sibley's guide. If anyone has any thoughts, it would be much appreciated. It's the large duck with white neck, black head and orange bill..
Thanks, Michael |

Hi, Michael! I see this is your first post, so a warm welcome to you from all of us on staff here at BirdForum!
Richard's right about this being a domestic hybrid duck. I'll leave it to others as to its possible parentage. ![]() |

This is how I arrived at the Birdforum - a few months ago my brother & I were driving past a wildlife park and he foolishly asked if I wanted to have a look - we immediately identified Mallard, Grebe, Coot, Mute swan, Moorhen only to be stumped by various ducks like the one you saw - armed with photo's I enquired here about my 'rare' ducks and was most dissapointed to have them labeled 'farmyard'.
I still love them especially the white ones which look like a 'cartoon' duck - you can see their Mallard ancestry usually from the pair of curled up feathers at the tail even though some of them are much larger than Mallards. |

Thanks everyone. I had hoped it was something better than that. Alas!
