Woodpecker ID Question

This is my first post. I am trying to identify a woodpecker that landed in my yard (Nassau County, Long Island, NY). It looks closest to a Golden-fronted Woodpecker except that it doesn't have any yellow spots, just red. According to the Nat'l Audubon Society Field Gde. to N. American Birds, that woodpecker is found in Oklahoma and Texas. The other bird it looks similar to is the Red-bellied Woodpecker which would be found in my area except that there is not red completely over the head of this bird that I'm seeing. Can anyone help? Thanks! Madam Librarian

Hi Madam Librarian,

From all the BirdForum Moderators and Administration, Welcome!

We are glad to have you join us in our appreciation of nature, especially wild birds.

We hope you find this site enjoyable and rewarding.

I believe your bird is a female Red-bellied Woodpecker. On the male the red covers the entire top of the bird's head, while on the female the red is only on the back of the head.

Thanks so much, Larry! You've cleared up a mystery. My guide book doesn't always have photos of the females.

I'm happy to have joined this forum. My husband and I are enjoying backyard birding. - Madam Librarian
