Rainham Marshes

Hi all.

I had very bad luck today on a special trip to Rainham Marshes, Essex. The reserve itself is really coming along nicely. I can seeing it becoming one of the best bird reserves in southern England in the next few years if all goes to plan.

Despite the fact that I was going round with some reserve guides, we failed to see the Penduline Tits (which have now not been seen for a few days), the regular Black Redstart (would have been a new species for me), and the Peregrine. All of theses species are seen on a daily basis (recently) by the staff there but none showed up. Just my luck!

We did however see some nice commoner species including Kingfisher, Black-Tailed Godwit, Curlew, Pintail, Shelduck, and Snipe.

Does anyway know when the RSPB Guided tours take place? I know the reserve is not publicly open yet but are these tours regular and do you need to book?? Are they specifically to see the Penduline Tits or just general tours.

Guided tours take place every Wednesday morning at 9am - you have to be there by 9 am sharp as the gates are usually opened specially to let you in unless the reserve is having an open day.

The tours will take in the entire reserve, not just the area favoured by the Pendulines.

Booking is advisable, but probably not essential.

Message from RSPB Rainham (I've just nicked this from the Essex Birdwatching Society website )...

RSPB Rainham Marshes Nature Reserve will be opening its gates for a general open access day on Saturday 18 March between 8am and 4pm, and there will be a guided ‘All things wild and Wonderful’ walk leaving from the car park at 10am. This will be the last opportunity for open access to the reserve until the Low Tide Open Weekend on 27th-28th May. We have a full list of scheduled events that will take place throughout the spring and summer. Details available on www.rspb.org.uk/rainham or contact 01708 892900.

Hopefully the weather might turn a bit warmer, and there'll be some early migrants about. While the reserve is still being developed, there aren't many chances to get on there and go birding - seize the opportunity!
