Lightbulb County by County & USA State Indexes

Recently we have received some PM requests and emails asking for the counties, states and other countries of the world section to be reopened. Old hands will remember this!

The location directory, found here, originally replaced it's original purpose, but we are willing open it again if there is sufficient interest for members to discuss what is going on in their local area with each other or everyone else. This would then provide a general discussion area for members in a particular area, and the location directory would remain. Every county and state is currently listed in the UK and America respectively, plus a lot of other countries around the world.

For example, there are now a lot of birders in the UK from Essex who may wish to discuss where to go, what's around, or how to get there (perhaps including transportation sharing). We also have pieces from nearly every state in the US. This would also need to be revived.

So please give this some thought and if enough of you respond favorably we will reopen it. As always, we are open to suggestion.

Kind regards,

Steve

I'm new here, but what you propose would be a good idea for someone like me getting started in the area. I am not sure how many active members there are here participating that live in the West Michigan, US area, but I think it would be nice.

Well spotted Karl - even I missed this thread when it was posted!

Personally I found it a very useful resource for local places to visit as well as when planning holidays or weekends away to areas I don't know well.

Anyone else like it reinstated?

Anyone not seen the old site lists -

UK County by County Index

USA State Index

Rest of the World Index

I'm brand-new to the forum, but I'd definitely be interested in this. Is it still an option? It doesn't look like there was a great deal of interest, or any recent participation from the States. If I add a new thread in that area, will someone set up a sub-forum for it?

I agree, tizziec. The only problem is that I would love to get information about my area, but I really don't have much to give. I've always loved birds, and I do have two or three bird books, but I'm definitely a novice. I've also just joined my first bird group this past month, and I've yet to go on my first actual "birding" trek. For that matter, I have yet to identify all of the different birds that come into my own yard! I guess I just want to put up a sub-folder for my state like an empty bird box, in the hope that someone else will come along and fill it. Ha! :P

I would imagine there are many new Birdforum members who weren't around when this was attempted the first time (myself included) who have been birding for a very long time. I would be willing to offer information on my area (which I see is empty!). I'm all for it. I suppose a refresher on acceptable content is in order.

I live in a great area for birding that has been greatly ignored due to the popularity of Cape May and Sandy Hook. That is good and bad. The areas remain quiet, but you have no one to let you know when certain birds are around or if they have moved and so on. There are a couple of local areas that get some attention but even the NJ audubon society ignored this block almost completely in their atlas. For heaven's sake they did not even get the islans that is full all spring of nesting egrets and herons! They have been there for what I can gather over 50 years and got no mention in the atlas. It is very frustrating sometimes. Heck we even had nesting Yellow Crowns this year and I had to send a pic to prove it as no one seems to think anything comes here yet the habitat is perfection!

Did I just rant a little?

LOL! It sounds like you have an undiscovered treasure there. I see that there is a sub-folder for New Jersey. You should post something about it!

Exclamation How do I add a State to the USA State Index?

Help! I'm all ready to add a thread for Mississippi, but when I click on New Thread, I get a message that says "you do not have permission to access this page." I also noticed there are threads for New York, Tennessee, Arkansas, Idaho and Oregon that are about two years old, but have never had sub-folders created.

Steve: Go for it. My county in Northern Calif. has a population density of 4 people
per square mile and I've only been able to find two others interested in birds.

There is a sub-folder for California, but you can't post anything there, either. It looks like only the UK County by County Index is actually functional. Does anyone know how we can get the USA State Index and the Rest of the World Index unlocked?
