Can anyone help me out with a "squeaky gate" call.
Best I can come up with is Bullfinch, which sounds OK, but my mystery bird was simply "open and close" then a pause, and then repeated, a few times, whereas the Bullfinch on my CD was more of a varied creaking "song". Don't know if Common Grackle strays your way, but that is the sound we associate with it.

I'd guess a Bullfinch. They very commonly just give a few calls, it is uncommon to hear the full song.
Michael PS Dennis, no Common Grackles here! - never recorded anywhere in Europe as far as ai know, and certainly not in Britain.

Ummm, interesting. I seem to remember Middle Spotted Woodpecker sounds like this. I'll meet you at the twitch, I'll be the one with bins around his neck!

Thanks folks...
As much as I'd like it to have been either Common Grackle or Middle Spotted Woodpecker, I think it's probably the Bullfinch. I'll check out my CD for L-E Owl, but I don't think the call of the young will be on. Cheers |
