Hi there and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum
Hmmm. I'd go with Sharp-shinned for this one.

Another welcome
Now, I'd go for a first calendar year Coopers on size and the tail shape - head pattern doesn't look right for Goshawk. Cheers, Andy. |

Its a coopers, if my humble opinion counts. The tail is rounded, not squared off like a sharpie. The plumage patterns are perfect. If you got a front picture, I could tell you for sure. But i say coop.

Thank you everybody for the welcome and the help before i posted i was pretty sure that it was either a coopers or a sharp shinned but they are so hard to tell apart especially with the little amount of experience i have with them. Thanks again

I feel pretty confident that, due to the rounded tail and plumage, it is a juvenile coopers. Sharpies tails are rectangular, and not as long

The tail shape is pretty good for a Cooper's, the spotty plumage equally good for a juvenile.
I'd agree with the majority that it's a juv Cooper's. (And would suggest again that we have a regular forum on cooper's Vs. sharp-shinned ID threads!) |

Here we go again! Accipiters do this deliberately, you know! It's a juv cooper. Rounded tail, overall size, no eyebar on thumbnail #1 argues against a juv goshawk. Coops are becoming more common in the suburbs.
