Hi Airedale,

Good to see another New Englander on the forum. I'm not a photographer but I like the pose as it's different to your average portrait.

Really nice photo. Good strong subject & composition. Only thing I would say is that there are alot of visible jpeg artifacts. Perhaps coming from the way you downsized for the web?

I like the detail. Being new to the photography game, I wouldn't recognize a JPEG artifact if it hit me in the head. Can someone please point them out to the non-initiated. Thanks.

Hi there. JPeg images are compressed & the compression process can make things appear that wreen't there in the original image. These are the jpeg artifacts. These generally occur at the boundaries between contrasting areas. So if you look at the right-hand side of the sparrows head where the yellow eyebrow meets the background, there is a wierd-looking blockiness extending into te background. That's jpeg artifact. It's also quite easy to see around the blade of grass on the righthand side.

I's sure that if you take a picture & compress it to its minimum size in photoshop (or whatever), you;ll see exactly what the JPEG artifact means.

And yes, it;s only a minor criticism, because the sav sparrow image is so strong otherwise.

I found the foreground distracting. Cropping most of it it out kept all of the bird intact and blending the edge frame covered the little that remained in the foreground.

I think it makes the great shot of the the bird stand out a bit more.

Just a thought.

I like your crop, Texas, especially as the blurred frame edges pop the ultra-sharp sparrow's face. Really draws your eye to the bird's eye. Great shot in any case, Airedale!
