Spanish snake - ID question

I saw this snake in the woodland near Olot in the Spanish Garrotxa (NE Spain). It was a good couple of feet long and had some kind of rattle in its tail which it shook when I tried to get closer. I'd appreciate any assistance in its identification.

Aesculapian snake (Elaphe longissima)? Non-venomous one, if anybody is interested.

yep i'd go with E. longissima, could possibly be the Ladder snake (Elaphe scalaris) but the nose seems to pointed for that species, both are non-venomous, Olot is on the southern boundary of the Aesculapian snake...

Yeah, Jacana is spot on. The head shape, the appearance of the oculars and of the rostral all say Aesculapian snake.

It's worth noting that the taxonomic status of the European 'Ratsnakes' has been extensively revised, with many species re-assigned. The current situation is the Aesculapian is now Zamenis longissimus, while the ladder snake has become Rhinechis scalaris.

Beautiful shot btw, great detail colours.

Lee.
