Personally, first thing in the morning is best. From 7am up until about 11am does for me. After that, I reckon the birds do have some sort of 'siesta'. Hot sunny days are also terrible for birding. I'd settle for dry, overcast and cool all the time. Unfortunately, here in Wales, we have to settle for wet, cold and depressing most of the time.
