Number of Birds seen in a year by all Birdforum Members?

I wonder how many of the 10,000 plus birds in the world are seen by the combined efforts of all the Birdforum members, 70%, 80%, or is that way too high, what do you think?

Something to ponder about!

Would it be possible to record this, now that would be a challenge!!

Cheers
Nick

Good question, when you think in the database we nearly have half of the total covered. A few months ago I went all through my Sibleys US book and checked the DB for any photos that needed updating or adding. I found 5 that we had missed but was quite surprised at the amount we have no pictures of at all, just in the US.

But out of the 5,000 that we do not have pictures of, how many of them are such "rarities" that we probably will never get pictures of, are some of them in such places you wouln't be able to get a camera.

I would put it at about 60% of the birds seen by BF members.

Thanks for the response, 60% isn't bad, is that over the time that BF has been going?

Hi Steve,
I wish I could but everything else gets in the way, I guess the easiest way would be to set up a spreadsheet for everone to fill in, would be interesting to see the raraties being ticked off gradually!

Cheers
