I photographed this Canastero in the Potrerillos area of Argentina (Mendoza) last August. I thought the tail pattern was indicative of Chestnut (Steinbach's) but other features leave me with some doubts about it being this species.
Any help with id greatly appreciated. Marcus |

it appears to have no red on throat
so the rufousy wings and uppertail/undertail covs, ash-grey head etc point to Steinbach's for me too the outer tail feathers are rufous and the rest appear black/with a rufous outer edge which would fit too. Tim |

Thanks Tim and Steve, the super behind the eye had me a little confused as it isn't shown in the Narosky field guide - then again this field guide left me more often confused than not!!
