Some Spanish birds for ID
I have just returned to Nova Scotia after 10 days in Andalucia, Spain - wonderful spot, especially the Guadalhoce Estuary near Malaga, and the raptor migration around Tarifa. We saw 109 species, but I found a few of them hard to ID - so I thought I'd post them here (sorry about the pic quality in some)-
1). A warbler silently hopping around the edge of a gas station not far from Tarifa. Based on leg color and general appearance, my guess is Willow, but other suggestions welcomed. 2). Another warbler silently moving through bushes at the Guadalhorce estuary, near Malaga. Based on leg color and short primary extension, my guess is (? Iberian) Chiffchaff. 3). A lark, that would sing both from the ground and a bush, at a gas station along the Autovia above Marbella. ? Thekla or ? Crested. 4). 2 Marsh terns at the Guadalhorce Estuary. One seems larger, has a stouter bill, and no dark neck mark. ? Black, (the left one flying) and Whiskered (the right one flying, and standing in front of the Stilt). Thanks for any comments. hi,
the first is willow warbler and I think the second too. The lark is crested, the bill is too long to be a thekla. At the end there 's a black winged stilt and the terns seem whiskered to me umberto visconti Last edited by cinclus : Wednesday 11th October 2006 at 14:06. Reason: english mistake |

1. Willow warbler 2. Willow warbler also 3. Crested Lark, mainly on bill structure as observer above. They do sometimes perch up. 4. The last two photos are almost black for me but Whiskered Tern looks good, though don't be surprised if someone later ID's it as Gull-billed as the legs look long and bill a little heavy. 5. Can't see this photo at all, I'm sorry. I'm sure you'll get a pretty thorough response soon and be able to get definitive ID's for them. Glad you had such a good time here in Spain. All the best

Gull billed would be showing black legs, but agree, bill does look heavy. However, whiskered they are, to me at least. Jono
