Dragonfly sp. Spain summer 2006

Does anybody have ideas on this dragonfly took by a friend of mine in Spain this summer?

Any help appreciated

Hi Paul,

You aint gonna believe this... lol
I entered "dragonflies spain" into altavista and the first site i found was www.iberianwildlife.com. I opened it and the first picture on there is VERY similar to the one in your picture. So this may very well be a Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii).
A closer shot will be helpful though, do you have any ?

I also thought this looked like a Red-veined Darter but can't be 100%.

Agreed looks like a female Red veined Darter to me also, quite a common dragonfly here in Spain. Nice one.

Yes, I agree on female Red-veined Darter. Blue underside to eyes, silvery panels on thorax, pale pterostigmas, rather short and 'thick' abdomen, etc., all point to this species.

This similar one was in sunny Leicestershire in September:
