Thumbs up Newborns hope for Lundy birdlife

Newborns hope for Lundy birdlife

More than 30 Manx shearwater chicks have been born on Lundy island as part of the programme to help re-establish them there.
Half the world's Manx shearwaters breed on two islands 40 miles (64km) away from Lundy in the Bristol Channel.

The RSPB says it is important to have another colony to protect them from a natural disaster or an oil spill.

The charity said the breeding success could be a result of the decision in 2004 to remove rats from the island.

Taped calls

Earlier this year, staff from the RSPB went across to Lundy from north Devon to check on numbers of Manx shearwaters.

They located their burrows by playing a tape of the birds' call.

If birds replied, then it was counted as an occupied nest.

Natural England, the Landmark Trust and the National Trust have all been involved with the RSPB in the programme to re-establish the bird.

Once the chicks have fledged, they migrate to islands off Brazil.
