Post Committee Against Bird Slaughter’s Brescia Bird Camp 2006 closes

The CABS’ Bird Camp in Brescia, N. Italy, closed last Sunday (19.11). Some 85 participants from Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the USA have taken part in operations since 07.10.06 and have located and dismantled 1,436 bow traps, 284 snap traps , 156 mist nets and 17 lime stick arrays. Information supplied by us led to the arrest of 17 poachers. The number of bow traps found is the lowest ever in our 21 years of operations in the Brescia region. Up until 2001, with an increasing number of participants and extent of operations, the number of these brutal traps found increased steadily, reaching a high point of over 12,000 traps in a period of only 3 weeks in October 2001. Since then, figures have dropped dramatically although more people took part in the camps. This is clearly a direct consequence of our close cooperation with the forest police which has led to more illegal trappers being caught in the act and thereby acting as a strong deterrent to others. On the negative side the number of mist nets found continues to increase. The 156 nets dismantled this year, with a total length of over 2,100 m, was the second largest number to date (only 2005 – 174 nets – exceeded this figure).

Operations in Italy continue with our Italian partners LAC and WWF carrying out patrols on every weekend up to Christmas and with the 2nd joint LIPU/LAC bird camp on Sardinia from the beginning of December onwards.
