Canon 350D and old macro flash

Hi,

I hope some one can help me with this question.
I have an old Canon Macro Ring Lite ML-3 flash unit that worked perfectly together with my EF 100/2.8 Macro on my EOS 50E back in the film days (a year ago).

From what I know, Canon's dSLRs "will not work" with non-EX flash units. But what exactly will happen if I try to use on my EOS 350D/Rebel XT?
Will it simply not work? Will it damage the camera? Or will I "just" lose some of the functions (such as E-TTL)?

Thanks,

Thomas
