Error Report

Hi All
After a few minutes of using an internet programme my computer is inviting me to send an error report to Microsoft. Although I have had this happen on rare occurences before, my computer has gone mad with it today, inviting me to send one every few minutes. If I click on it (either send or don't send) the programme closes down.
Please can someone help using very basic simple instructions on what to do.
Thanks
Sue

Sue,

Which program were you using when the error occurred, did you send an error report and, if so, did you then click on the "more information" tab and what did it say? Which AV and Firewall are you using?

As a first resource run SpyBot, Adaware SE and CCleaner and then try a system restore.

I am trying to edit my web site (freewebs) but have been also using google too. I have Norton anti virus installed. (Don't think I have a Firewall other than Microsoft package or whatever Norton provide via Live update.)
How do I run SpyBot, Adaware SE and CCleaner and then try a system restore and will a system restore affect any of the things I have on my system? (I would hate to lose any of my data.)
Thanks
Sue

Even replying to this message has also triggered 'Send an Error Report'

You should be able to cure the problem by using "System Restore". You find this through Start / All Programs / Accessories / SystemTools / System Restore. Use it to take your computer's files back to the state they were in prior to when the error began.

This has no effect on your saved files, e.g. photos and documents, so all is safe. If you have installed any programs recently and take the system back before they were installed, you will need to reinstall them after using System Restore.

A useful and free program to use alongside your Norton is Microsoft Windows Defender. Install this and run a full scan of your system (not a quick scan). This will detect and remove any spyware programs that you might have fallen foul of while surfing the web.

Thank you to all. I downloaded the Spybot (who relieved me of £20) that told me I had 200 infections (after my flu last week this did not surprise me!!!) Goodness knows if I hit the right buttons or whether they have cured them? Then I did a system restore which seems to have solved the problem. (fingers crossed) Now of course Spybot seem to have disappeared!

Any new downloads right before a system restore will go bye-bye so you may have to download it again.

So it seems like you're saying that your problems are happening while browsing the web.

What browser are you using? I've noticed in the last few days that I'm having similar problems, using Firefox.

Gosh these are complicated questions! (I think I will need a system restore on my poor brain after all the problems I have had with my computer just recently!) Browser- what is this? I have IE and Google ! I have sat forever with a scan running from SpyBot which tells me I am infected, (I knew this as I had a week in bed with flu !!) 200 problems apparently..............gosh is that all ?? But then after system restore (and a big glass of red wine) all seems to be well. I am downloading SpyBot again and it is busy scanning away again...........isn't it fun........!!! Luckily I printed off my registration code but now have no idea what to do with it as it hasn't yet asked me for it!!

Can't wait for the next exciting event!
Thanks to all for your help.
Sue.....definitely in need of a system restore now! .........will it make me look any younger?

I would always use System Restore as the first line. SpyBot is free, isn't it? Also I'd say that Windows Defender is the better choice as it is so very user friendly - it also runs constantly to protect your system continuously (SpyBot can be set to do this but not so well).

Many of the 200 "infections" will have simply been harmless cookies, I'd guess - so don't worry. You'll need to reinstall SpyBot, of course, as System Restore will have moved your computer to a time prior to when you installed it.

If you still have problems, use SR to go back to an even earlier time, then reinstall Windows Defender or SpyBot and boot into "Safe Mode" (press F8 at start up and choose "Safe Mode"). When in Safe Mode - it takes a while - run Windows Defender or SpyBot. In Safe Mode, you're much more likely to clear all spy/virus problems. Run your anti-Virus program once Defender/SpyBot has done its job, also in Safe Mode. Then re-boot and all should be well.

Sue, how on earth were you charged GBP 20 (sorry, no "pound" sign on my new keyboard!) for Spybot? - this is freeware. Visit: http://www.filehippo.com/ for reliable free software downloads.

My IE7 crashes now and then (at least twice a day) and I get these annoying error messages, too.

Sue,

Can you give a run-down on your system (browser, internet security, firewall, etc., you mention Norton - is that just AV or the full works?).

If you are using Internet Explorer I would say "ditch it" and switch to Firefox.

Running Spybot and Adaware usually pick up problems that your integral security software misses. Beware that running CCleaner will also remove cookies and all manner of other things - but it is very good (its full name is Crap Cleaner!).

Keep going,

Colin

Alt 0163 gives you a £ sign (with NumLock on).

Thanks to all for the advice. I have had no annoying error messages today and with fingers crossed all is well.
I did download the free SpyBot and it said I had 200 infections. Then up came a message to say that to fix the majority of them they would need just under £20. So I paid up, as by then I was desperate for a solution. The programme then seemed to change its name to Spyware Doctor. In actual fact I think the system restore advice would probably have done the job. Anyway for now all seems to be well, so once again thanks to all.

You were a teeny bit conned, I'm afraid. The program you downloaded is from an advertisement on the same page as the download link to SpyBot.

But... no worries as it's still a good program that does its job well! Don't renew in a year, though - just download Microsoft Windows Defender instead.

Sue are sure you dowloaded Spybot search and destroy? That's the one people mean when they say Spybot, I have 3 kids with laptops and have spent hours cleaning rubbish off them and the most pernicious ones have been supposedly anti virus/spyware progs with similar names, for instance Spywarebot which is the one I think you had first time. The tools I used to clean my kids laptops where:-
Spybot S&D
AdawareSE
AVG
CCleaner
They are all ones that users recommend and I mean users on all sorts of other forums, don't go by only one recommendation and don't just google for free anti virus etc, very dangerous.
Hope that is of some help.

Mick

I don't know much about Apple. Doesn't your OS have the correspondent of the Windows Character Map?

Windows Error reports

A useful little app that reports problems to Microsoft so that they can fix them. Often when reporting is over IE will open on a report from Microsoft telling you if they know about your issue and what can be done to fix it. The reallity is that they often blame some third party hardware driver for the fault and ask for you to keep sending the reports. The only way to find what is wrong is look in your event log for errors. Right click My Computer and select Computer Management, I am assuming you are using XP, the event logs are at the top of the left hand pane. Look at the entries in here to see if there are any warnings. Post them back here so we can look at them.

Vectis

I gave up on IE7 after one week of constant crashing, i downloaded it as soon as it was available & i like the new functionality, but really it is just a copy of Mozilla Firefox (which i now use). Download this (it's free) - i've not had a problem yet (4 months), it's never crashed & has the same features as IE7 (& more & better), and is due for an update soon.
