RFI Syrian Woodpeckers in Warsaw?
Hi all,
Next week I am visiting Warsaw, Poland with work. I will have very limited time for birding and will be based in the city centre, but would like to try and see Syrian Woodpecker. I've been told Syrian Woodpecker can be seen in city parks in Warsaw - is this correct? Please can anyone give advice about seeing this species in Warsaw (I won't be able to travel outside the city). Thanks a lot, Ben |

Try Polish list PTAKI.
Several years ago it was possible to see it 1) in the old park at Nowoursynowska street (old Agricultural University), and on clumps of trees at and below the steep slope behind the park. Meadows around are good for other birds, too. 2) Suburbs along and around creek Wilanowka, near streets Zawodzie, Spiralna, Wal Zawadowski, roughly between tiny railway bridge crossing the creek and Vistula. Syrian is generally very unpredictable - I never managed to find a sure spot. Try to recognize it's voice to avoid chasing Greater Spotteds. But first place is good for other birds and well connected to city centre. Second requires longish walk and is rather ugly. But not far away is very nice bird-wise park Morysin. |
