Arrow A day at the Golf Course

A day at the golf course. One of my best birding days without really trying.
A Jackdaw watched me putt on the first hole. Several later, singly and in groups.
Mallard female with 7 ducklings crossed the fairway of the second hole.
Magpies seen at the fourth hole and later.
Rooks at the fifth hole and later.
Blackbirds at the seventh hole and later.
Mallards flew over the eighth hole.
A pair of Mute Swans at the ninth.
Greater Black-headed Gulls flew over, noticed at the tenth hole and later.
A group of Starlings and a Woodpigeon were seen at the eleventh.
House Martins flew over the twelfth hole and I saw a Kestrel hovering here.
Great Spotted Woodpeckerflew past me as I walked to the thirteenth. The vivid red rump was very noticeable.
I saw a Moorhen at the fifteenth and a Coot at the eighteenth, with two male Mallards. (Our golf course has lots of water hazards!)
At the sixteenth I had another view of a Kestrel. After hovering for a few minutes it dived to the ground where I saw it chasing away a Magpie before it flew off again.

After the golf I walked along a footpath by the golf course. As when playing I heard lots of unfamiliar songs from birds I could not spot. I was also able to get some good pictures of Rooks; Jackdaws (singly, and in groups mostly with the Rooks); and a Kestrel hovering again. Also
Green Woodpecker flew past me as I walked back. The yellow colouration is very obvious.
Back home, some of the usual – Robins, Blackbirds, Greenfinch, Pigeons, and the Sparrow that seems to spend two hours each morning and two hours each evening announcing its presence from the same spot on our roof. On a personal note I was also able to add Magpie to my garden list as one flew over.
Without really tryingI have three new birds on my lists - Jackdaws and the two woodpeckers.
Alan
Feeling slightly more justified in my pseudonym. Now I want to photograph a Picus viridis.

I'm another birdwatcher/golfer and sadly eagles do not come into play in either form. I really have a pretty good list of species on my course and I like to think watching birds between shots is better than thinking about my last bad shot.

When I was in Spain on a golfing holiday it was very difficult to concentrate on golf with such exotics as Bee-eaters, Woodchat Shrike, and Hoopoe around.

Good day out Alan, its nice to mix and match our hobbies. Most of my birding is done with a fishing rod in front of me. Mick

Feathered birdies are the only ones that I ever get on a golf course Alan!

Had a fantastic experience with a Kestrel while playing at Pennington Flash not so long ago, really close views, one within about 15ft of it perched in a tree!

Golf courses are great for birding but not sure how I'd get on trying to swing with a pair of bins round my neck!

Good to know there are other Golfer/Birders out there.
