We are keen to get into digiscoping, but know nothing at all about it, other than what we have tried to research from the web.

Is it possible to make a start using our present Minolta Dimage 5?

Yes , I think you can start exploring digiscoping with that camera.
I am very new to digiscoping myself, but I have taken some decent pictures by hand-holding my Canon S30 to the eyepiece of my scope.

I good first step for you would be to try the hand-holding method with your camera. You just hold the camera as close as possible to the lens and take a picture. Remeber that you need to focus the scope differently for the camera than your eyes. You need to adjust the focus by looking at the image on the LCD of the camera and try to get it as sharp as possible (this is the hardest part of digiscoping I think).

When you have tried this method, you will now if it is possible to use your camera with your scope. After that you could start looking for adapters if you like. There are adapters that you can attach to the tripod attachment in the bottom of the camera instead of lens threads, so that is not a big problem.

I think it must depend on the camera, Elizabeth. I focus the scope for the eye, then attach camera and shoot. That gives me the best results. The real lesson, I think, is that you just have to try out different methods and go with what works for you.
