Bird Word Jumble
Never done anything like this before, so I don't know if it will work, or if it will be too easy or too hard!
Anyway, the following list of 50 (as it happens) words can be combined to make 20 species of bird (according to my list). All you have to do is combine them into the list of 20. The only clue I will give at this stage is to say that some of the names are hyphenated, and where so, I have ignored the hyphen and treated the parts as separate words. Does that make sense? Well let's see how it goes, eh? I feel I must have got about four right, but the rest seem to fit!. I seem to have picked up an extra species somehow!. I blame Darwin!. I can't stop laughing. I had 11 species writen down when these answers appeared......none of them are listed above! Guess it wouldn't have worked out if I would have continued.

I didn't get any right but am seriously confused by Charles Harper's latest photograph.
Have you been drinking the "Elixor of Youth" or is it just less hair on the chin and a fancy hat? I liked you the other way with your Sea-fowls' loudness... etc. Reminded me a bit of "The Ancient Mariner", though not suggesting that you are or even appeared to be, ancient.

OK, I'm stumped! 23 of the 50 words are nouns (dove, finch, etc.) so obviously some of them have to be combined. I've found a quail-thrush, but the only other thing I can think of is "sparrowhawk" which is really one word, not hyphenated in any source I've seen. And if I combine both sparrows with both hawks, so as to get 20 nouns, I've got a problem with "bicolored." Can you give a hint?

Firstly, let me welcome you, Ken, on behalf of the Moderators and Admin to BirdForum.
If you pop over to "Say Hello" and post a few lines about yourself, you're sure to get some more welcomes. Clues... OK 1. Alan... I'm afraid you got a big fat Zero! 2. You are right, Ken, that Sparrowhawk is not hyphenated (in my source either), and so would count as a single word. And as it isn't in the the list... 3. You are also right, Ken, that some must be combined... good spot! 4. There is one geographic name that is easier to equate to species than the others (I reckon). 5. There are no single-name species. 6. The "LARGE" and the "MEDIUM" are otherwise the same. 7. Knowing what I do about dennis, I expect his 11 were probably right! |

I'm quite prepared for someone to come up with a different list of 20 birds though! You might want to have a bit of a of a rethink on 2 and 3 three though... getting perilously close to a start (and I reckon if you get the right 4 or 5, the others will just about fall into place... mind you, I've got the answers!!!) |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my sources show Cape Verde ISLAND Petrel, so I'm assuming that's not one of the correct birds.

Thanks Dennis! I don't have Clements' list, so I'm a bit handicapped I guess. Next question: Is Quailfinch hyphenated or not in the "authoritative" list?
And I'd love to see your anagrams, Birdman! I'm a bit of a cryptic crossword fan, so the3 prospect of combining birds and anagrams intrigues me.

OK, here goes: I'm sure I'm missing something, because I have 21 birds, and had to add an extra "great," but this is the best I could do with what I have on hand: 1. African Collared-Dove 2. Bright-Rumped Yellow-Finch 3. Large Tree-Finch 4. Medium Tree-finch 5. Warbler Finch 6. Yellow Flycatcher 7. Bicolored Hawk 8. Semicollared Hawk 9. African Hoopoe 10. Cape Verde Petrel 11. Aha! I was using the "Traditonal List" on my Thayer's software, and the Yellow Flycatcher-Warbler (Chloropeta natalensis) is listed there as African Yellow Warbler. Cross-checking with Sibley's, I found it, and obviously that solves the difficulty. Thanks -- I'll be more diligent to cross reference next time! Grace and peace -- Ken

17 out of 20 plus one spare! Keep your eyes peeled... I can feel some anagrams coming on! (At least with those, I know what I'm dealing with!) Robin, 16 out of 20... but... and I KNEW this would happen... you've got 20 valid species, so moral victory to you. (Well I said it was the first time I'd tried something like this. I'll have to be more careful next time) Here's where you outdid me...
